Wälderbähnle - Old Timer Railway
The rhythm of yesteryear
From 1902 to 1980 the Bregenzerwald was connected to the Vorarlberg capital of Bregenz and Lake Constance by a typically Austrian 760mm gauge railway. For the whole of its working life the Bregenzerwald railway had to wage a continuous struggle against the forces of nature, especially through the river gorges that affected roughly half of its 35 kilometre length. In the end an enormous rock fall near Kennelbach brought a final end to through traffic on the railway.
Today the “Wälderbähnle” old timer railway takes you back to the good old days of narrow gauge travel.
Between the stations of Bezau und Schwarzenberg historic steam and diesel locomotives still run on 5 kilometres of the former stretch of railway: a great reminder of bygone days and popular with day trippers, holidaymakers and railway buffs alike.
Take a train ride on one of the historical old-timers, and experience the gentle hilly scenery at the more sedate pace of bygone years.
